So what’s the Paleo Diet anyway?

March 1, 2014 by mikejbrennan@comcast.net

From Web MD, 3/1/2014

The Promise

Eat like a caveman and shed pounds. That’s the theory behind the Paleo Diet.

Loren Cordain, PhD, who literally wrote the book on The Paleo Diet, claims that by eating like our prehistoric ancestors, we’ll be leaner and less likely to get diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and other health problems.

Also called the Caveman Diet or the Stone Age diet, it’s basically a high-protein, high-fiber eating plan that promises you can lose weight without cutting calories.

What You Can Eat and What You Can’t

Go Paleo, and you’ll eat a lot of fresh lean meats and fish, fruits, and vegetables, and healthier fats.

You can also eat:

  • Eggs
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Healthier oils, including olive oil and coconut oil

You can’t eat any processed foods on this diet. And since our ancestors were hunter-gatherers, not farmers, say goodbye to wheat and dairy, along with other grains and legumes (such as peanuts and beans). Other foods to avoid:

  • Dairy
  • Refined sugar
  • Potatoes
  • Salt
  • Refined vegetable oils, such as canola

Level of Effort: Moderate

There’s no calorie counting, and the fiber-rich fruits and vegetables will fill you up, as will the lean meat.

Limitations: The Paleo Diet allows for some cheating, especially at first. When you’re just starting, you can eat what you want for 3 meals a week. Cordain calls those “open meals.

“Or you can challenge yourself to just one “open meal” per week.

Shopping and cooking: You’ll need to stock up on the allowed foods and cook from scratch, so plan for kitchen time.

Packaged foods or meals? None. Processed foods are a no-no.

In-person meetings? None.

Exercise: Not required when you’re losing weight. But Cordain strongly recommends it to maintain weight loss and for overall health.

Does It Allow for Dietary Restrictions or Preferences?

Vegetarian or vegan: This diet emphasizes meat and fish, and Cordain says it’s impossible to follow a Paleo Diet without eating meat, seafood, or eggs. Excellent vegetarian sources of protein, such as beans and other legumes, are not allowed.

Low-salt diet: The diet doesn’t allow salt, so it may help you cut down on sodium. If you do eat any foods that come from a can or a box, you would still need to check the sodium on food labels.

What Else You Should Know

Costs: Eating a lot of meat and fish can raise your grocery bill.

Support: You can do this diet on your own. If you want to connect to your fellow Paleos, there are Paleo Diet forums online.

At Artesian, we carry a variety of Paleo-friendly products. Two very popular snack foods that we carry are the Steve’s PaleoGoods line of snacks and PaleoPeople’s line of fruit and nut cluster snacks.

Who’s taking care of you?

January 9, 2013 by mikejbrennan@comcast.net

Leslie Brennan, owner of Artesian Natural Foods, had an epiphany in her own life recently. Like most of us, she is busy and constantly trying to balance getting enough healthy foods into her diet as well as supplements to keep her system alkaline. Leading a stressful lifestyle can create acidosis (acidosis is a condition in which the body chemistry becomes imbalanced and overly acidic symptoms an be insomnia, water retention and more).

selfcare-is-not-selfish

Leslie has recently taken on the “80/20 principal” in her life. This means that 80% of the time she practices wellness (good diet, supplementation and exercise) and 20% of the time she takes for her own enjoyment (eating what you want, take a nap or get a massage). Leslie refers to this as “healing interludes” and she practices these on a regular basis. Perhaps this is something more of us should consider. After all, how can we take care of others if we are not well ourselves?

Your Journey Towards Health

December 26, 2012 by mikejbrennan@comcast.net

Women have been sharing with us how they feel for over 20 years now. Most of them want more energy, less stress, better sleep, weight loss, better mood and more hours in the day. We as women do so much. A lot of us find ourselves running between family and extracurricular activities and try to do for all. Add in a career to the mix and that doesn’t leave much time for you.

women-friends

What’s amazing is a lot of these women have dreams of doing more. Giving of themselves is a big part of a lot of women’s lives. In this hurried pace of life one of the things that suffers is the quality of the food we eat. Too many bad fats and refined sugars are two of the most detrimental things we can eat for our health. Reduce bad fats in our diets and start using healthy oils such as coconut oil, olive oil and even avocado oil. If you’re hooked on the sugars, that can take a lot of will power to reduce. Look into some of the substitutes such as stevia, xylotol and even agave.

Stress reduction also helps. Exercise reduces stress and is one of the single most important things we can do to reduce bad (LDL) cholesterol. Increasing Omega 3 consumption is essential. A glass of red wine or a piece of dark chocolate can also have a positive effect on our health.

Ladies! If you take anything away from this it should be that caring for yourself is not just for one month out of the year, but a lifelong endeavor. Don’t let making changes create more stress. Take baby steps, creating health is a journey.
