Who’s taking care of you?

January 9, 2013 by mikejbrennan@comcast.net

Leslie Brennan, owner of Artesian Natural Foods, had an epiphany in her own life recently. Like most of us, she is busy and constantly trying to balance getting enough healthy foods into her diet as well as supplements to keep her system alkaline. Leading a stressful lifestyle can create acidosis (acidosis is a condition in which the body chemistry becomes imbalanced and overly acidic symptoms an be insomnia, water retention and more).

selfcare-is-not-selfish

Leslie has recently taken on the “80/20 principal” in her life. This means that 80% of the time she practices wellness (good diet, supplementation and exercise) and 20% of the time she takes for her own enjoyment (eating what you want, take a nap or get a massage). Leslie refers to this as “healing interludes” and she practices these on a regular basis. Perhaps this is something more of us should consider. After all, how can we take care of others if we are not well ourselves?

Your Journey Towards Health

December 26, 2012 by mikejbrennan@comcast.net

Women have been sharing with us how they feel for over 20 years now. Most of them want more energy, less stress, better sleep, weight loss, better mood and more hours in the day. We as women do so much. A lot of us find ourselves running between family and extracurricular activities and try to do for all. Add in a career to the mix and that doesn’t leave much time for you.

What’s amazing is a lot of these women have dreams of doing more. Giving of themselves is a big part of a lot of women’s lives. In this hurried pace of life one of the things that suffers is the quality of the food we eat. Too many bad fats and refined sugars are two of the most detrimental things we can eat for our health. Reduce bad fats in our diets and start using healthy oils such as coconut oil, olive oil and even avocado oil. If you’re hooked on the sugars, that can take a lot of will power to reduce. Look into some of the substitutes such as stevia, xylotol and even agave.

Stress reduction also helps. Exercise reduces stress and is one of the single most important things we can do to reduce bad (LDL) cholesterol. Increasing Omega 3 consumption is essential. A glass of red wine or a piece of dark chocolate can also have a positive effect on our health.

Ladies! If you take anything away from this it should be that caring for yourself is not just for one month out of the year, but a lifelong endeavor. Don’t let making changes create more stress. Take baby steps, creating health is a journey.
